3ο Workshop “The intersection of addiction, trauma and shame”

Addiction, trauma and shame often occur together. When they do coincide, they compound the problems associated with each of them, and the individual is even more vulnerable. Substances and addictive behaviors are often used to avoid the painful psychological effects of trauma and shame. Traumatic injury is an unfortunate consequence of life in the dangerous world of drugs. And shame is a frequent response to trauma and the social stigma of addiction. These combined problems make healing and recovery even more difficult. In this three-day workshop, we will explore what happens at the intersection of addiction, trauma and shame. The workshop will begin with a review of the principles of relational Gestalt therapy, and we will consider what experiences of our own we bring to our meeting with the addicted patient. The nature of trauma and research about its associations with addiction will be explored, both in lecture and in experiential work. What do we know about our own traumas, and how does that inform our work as therapists? Shame as a mediator of addiction and trauma treatments will be investigated, including recent research on the relationship between shame and relapse to addictive behaviors. Of particular importance are the subtle ways in which shame can arise in the addiction treatment context. An experiential exercise will guide us to a personal understanding of the healing of shame in addiction. Finally, we will consider what therapeutic structures and approaches can support a combined addiction–trauma--shame treatment. Case examples will be provided throughout, and opportunities for doing individual therapy demonstrations and your own case consultation will be available during the training.
